How Café au lait Differs from Other Coffee Drinks

Cafe au lait is a delicious coffee beverage that blends one-third drip coffee with two-thirds of hot, frothed milk.

Cafe au lait was originally a French coffee beverage that is very innovative in that it is incredibly sweet and scrumptious. Through the years, it has become very popular all over the world.

Cafe au lait is a beloved coffee drink in Louisiana, especially in New Orleans. It is created in a Cajun style that although a lot like an Italian latte, there are some differences that make it unique.

An Italian latte for example, is made with espresso whereas Cafe au lait is made using coffee that has been brewed. Also, Cafe au lait uses the same amount of coffee as it does steamed milk. To make the taste of a Cafe au lait sweeter, sugar is typically implemented into the beverage.

If you wish to make a cup of Cafe au lait in the Cajun way, you will need to use coffee that is a dark roast and has been brewed incredibly strong. Also, the coffee you use will need to be infused with chicory. Typically, the majority of the coffee consumed in Louisiana is of a chicory blend.

To make your own Cajun Cafe au lait is simple to do right at home. Start by brewing a pot of coffee in a drip coffee maker that is very strong and contains the necessary chicory blend.

You will water the temperature of your water to be approximately 204 degrees F which will allow it to be very hot yet not quite at a boil. A very small amount of this water should be poured into the drip coffeemaker. Your filter should have about six tablespoons or so of a nice dark roast coffee.

You will want to keep pouring your water over top of your coffee grounds until the brewing process is complete. At this stage, you will need to scald six cups of milk. It is essential though that you do not boil the milk, as it will greatly effect the taste of your beverage.

Warm up Cafe au lait bowls and pour the coffee into them and then add your scalded milk. That is all there is to creating a delicious Cajun style Cafe au lait at home.

In a number of coffee shops, especially in America, if you order a Cafe au lait, you will be served a latte that has been brewed using very strong coffee. This can upset serious coffee drinkers, as they know that there are differences.

Cafe au lait is brewed coffee, often a dark French roast combined with chicory, which is made with half scalded although not steamed milk. It is placed into the mug from two different pots. Cafe latte on the other hand is a shot of espresso that is poured into a glass containing steamed milk and is very frothy.

Cinnamon flavored Cafe au lait is also incredibly delicious. To make a cinnamon Cafe au lait at home, you will need-

4 cups of hot coffee
4 cups of scalded milk
6 cinnamon sticks

Take six mugs that are large and pour in an equal amount of coffee and milk. Place a cinnamon stick into each cup to allow the flavor to infuse into the brew.

You can also create a scrumptious chocolate Cafe au lait that will satisfy absolutely any sweet tooth. To make your own chocolate Cafe au lait, you will need-

2 cups of half-and-half
2 cups of very strong coffee
1 tablespoon of sugar
2 tablespoons of cocoa powder

Heat the half-and-half over very low heat and then pour the coffee into the milk. Mix the sugar and cocoa in the coffeepot. Pour the hot milk and coffee back into the coffeepot and stir well.

I am looking for a set of cafe au lait servers, with beautiful long spouts, such as I saw in Venice recently and long ago in Paris. The server poured from them simultaneously, and the result was so very pleasing. Could you advise where I could purchase such a pair? thank you. lj
